Washington University in St. Louis “Taiwan Theatre and Chinese Cultural Tradition,” 2012/7/1~2017/6/30
  • Project Description

“Taiwan Theatre and Chinese Cultural Tradition,” July 1, 2012-June 30, 2017

    • A major initiate of the grant is a three-year teaching post-doctoral position to offer both graduate and undergraduate courses in colonial Taiwan literature and culture.
    • On April 5-6, 2014, we held a theater workshop, “Adaption in Taiwan Theatre and Chinese Cultural Tradition,” with theater professionals from Taiwan and scholars from the United States, Germany, and Shanghai.
    • We continued the same research fellowships for faculty and doctoral students to go to Taiwan.
    • We also continued our undergrad internships in Taiwan.
    • Lectures on Taiwan and East Asia
    • Funds were given to the East Asian Library to purchase an online database, Taiwan Electronic Periodical Services (TEPS), that offers access to articles in more than 900 Taiwanese periodicals in various subjects.
    • We organized a workshop, “Sights and Sounds of the Cold War in East Asia,” with scholars from Taiwan, China, and North America. This is one of the three workshops that we have in the plan for 2017, 2018, and 2019, to be held in St. Louis, Taipei, and Beijing, respectively.
  • Outcome Feature Description

Our second project has attracted serious attention from the Performing Arts Department to seek collaborations with my department and with Taiwan Ministry of Education. The plan is twofold: firstly, to set up a Visiting Artist’s position in Dance and invite renowned dancers from Taiwan to hold workshops and give lectures; secondly, to invite noted experimental theatre groups in Taiwan to visit our campus for a semester, to hold workshops and to perform one representative play in our Edison Theater.
