The 3rd World Congress of Taiwan Studies

The “3rd World Congress of Taiwan”, an international conference on Taiwan studies will start on September 6-8, 2018 at Academia Sinica. An opening ceremony is going to be held at International Conference Hall: 3rd floor of HSSB on Sep. 6 at 9 a.m. The first World Congress of Taiwan Studies was launched in Academia Sinica in 2012, second conference was held in 2015 in SOAS, UK. This year, Academia Sinica will again organize the third conference, it is the largest Taiwan studies conference and hoped the event will help to establish strong ties among Taiwan studies’ scholars around the world. Participants from all over the world are going to attend the conference including many leading experts in this field.

It is initiated and organized by Vice President, Academician, Chin-shing Huang and Dr. Hsin-huang Michael Hsiao, Distinguished Research Fellow of Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica, along with 6 institutes and research centers from Academia Sinica’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. The third conference will be attended by 118 top specialists from the world. Scholars from the Taiwan Studies-related Associations of Japan, Europe, and North America, and two well-known Taiwan Studies Research Centers — Center for Taiwan Studies School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), UK, and the European Research Center on Contemporary Taiwan at the University of Tübingen, Germany — as well as scholars from Canada, France, Belgium, Hungary, Czech Republic, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Singapore are among those who will present their papers.

The Congress lasts three days and consists of one keynote speech, one plenary sessions, two roundtables, 23 parallel sessions, one concluding roundtable, and the presentation of 94 papers in total. 

Sessions include topics in art, literature, history, religion, economics, sociology, political science, law, archaeology, linguistics, environmental change, and indigenous Austronesian studies. It is hoped that the conference will provide a platform to share academic achievements in Taiwan studies, help develop interdisciplinary collaborations, facilitate worldwide networks and enhance visibility for Taiwan Studies.
